Arsene Wenger is considering making a double Ajax swoop this summer. The Arsenal boss is a big admirer of young defensive pair Gregory Van der Wiel and Jan Vertonghen and may make a move for the £22m rated pair as he looks to bring in new defensive options as he the north London club prepares to lose William Gallas after failing to come to terms on a new contract with the French international.

Van der Wiel is a promising attack minded right back and has been linked with a move to the Emirates for the best part of a year. The 22 year old has had a great season at the Amsterdam Arena as Martin Jol’s side came painfully close to claiming a long awaited Eredivisie title. The speedy wide man is part of the Dutch World Cup set up and would surely welcome a move to the Premier League to join his international team mate Robin Van Persie at Arsenal.

Jan Vertonghen formed an immense partnership in the centre of the Ajax defence with current Arsenal man Thomas Vermaelen and Wenger may feel that the same pairing would work well at the club. The 22 year old is also an international compatriot of Vermaelen’s and is a strong presence at the centre of defence but can also play well in the defensive midfield role.

The duo would be dearly missed at Ajax and Jol would do his best to avoid losing such a talented pair but he may well find it hard to prevent the pair demanding a move that they both know would greatly enhance their careers.
