Old Trafford boss lines up replacement for potential outgoing Serbian.
ALEX FERGUSON will launch a £25million bid for Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.
The Juventus centre-back, 25, is the Manchester United chief’s top choice to replace Nemanja Vidic, should the Serb quit Old Trafford as expected.
Despite being one of the biggest names in Serie A, Chiellini earns a modest £1.7m a year and has two seasons left on his current contract at Juve.
It is understood that the Old Lady of Turin would accept a bid for him as they look to rebuild their side following a disastrous season – they finished seventh in the Italian top flight.
And Fergie is on red alert, with Manchester City expected to launch a £20m bid for wantaway Vidic in the next few days. (The Sun)
Whilst it would clearly be a big loss if Sir Alex Ferguson found himself having to lose Nemanja Vidic there is no doubting that 25 year old Juventus centre back Giorgio Chiellini would be a very able replacement. The Italian international is considered one of the most solid defenders in Serie A but after the horror season that the Turin club had last term, a move could well be a possibility.
Vidic’s agent has hinted repeatedly that his client would be ready to leave Old Trafford with Real Madrid being a far more likely destination than Eastlands. Ferguson would of course fight off interest as far as possible but would not want to keep a player at the club who didn’t want to be there.
Chiellini is a robust, determined no nonsense defender who is a very useful weapon to have on attacking set pieces. The former Fiorentina man has spent the last five years at the Old Lady of Italian football and seen the club dip wildly of late and would probably welcome a move to the Premier League and a return to Champions League football.
