Tottenham are rumoured to be ready to make an offer for Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick and are willing to offer Russian forward Roman Pavlyuchenko in order to tempt Sir Alex Ferguson into allowing the former White Hart Lane man to make a shock return to the club.
Harry Redknapp reportedly moved to quash speculation of a move for the England international a couple of months back but many have seen this as a deliberate attempt to try to drive down any asking price for a player who has not been in the best of form of late. The Spurs boss made similar claims when first asked about his interest in Joe Cole, a player that he has now actively claimed to be trying to snare.
Given that the Old Trafford side could well do with further attacking options but have little in the way of funds to do so, or so many have suggested, such is the damage caused by the club’s American owners, a deal that could see a player of Pavlyuchenko’s quality brought in may well be considered worth accepting.
The former Spartak Moscow man was lauded following his excellent performances for his country at Euro 2008 and was chased by many sides on the completion of that tournament and was snapped up by Juande Ramos but doesn’t appear to be a player that Redknapp values too highly.
It would seem that any such deal would probably involve the north London club having to put some money on the table as well as the Russian to snap up £22m rated Carrick.
