Emirates boss keen on top class World Cup performer.
According to reports in Spain, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and his Premier League counterpart, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, are leading the race for FC Porto star Raul Meireles ahead of Real Madrid.
The heavily tattooed playmaker was one of the few players to emerge from Portugal’s World Cup campaign with his credit still intact, and Spanish publication Marca suggest the FC Porto talisman is attracting strong interest from Manchester United and Arsenal. Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have allegedly requested to be kept informed of the player’s situation at Porto, and although Jose Mourinho is also an admirer, the report indicates Meireles would prefer a move to the Premier League.
Marca suggest the 27-year-old wants to leave FC Porto this summer and although the player’s buyout clause is currently set at £25 million, the newspaper inmates that Manchester United or Arsenal could obtain the mercurial midfield maestro for as little as £10 million. (Sport.co.uk)
I for one was very impressed with the performances Raul Meireles put in during Portugal’s stuttering World Cup campaign. The FC Porto man was very comfortable on the ball and had the strength and determination of a defensive midfielder but was always ready to spring forward and add something to the attack.
It’s no surprise that a great many of Europe’s top clubs are now taking an interest in the 27 year old former Boavista man and given that he has been at his current club for five seasons and won the title in the first four it could well be that he is more than happy to pursue a new challenge and would surely jump at a move to the Emirates.
Given the financial problems at Old Trafford, Arsene Wenger could well lead the chase and if as this source suggests, he can be purchased for as little as £10m then that would be an absolute bargain. He could work well in the centre of the Gunners midfield and has the strength and ability to make it in the Premier League.
