Could Uruguayan be a great foil for Old Trafford hit man?
Ajax have invited Manchester United to make them an offer they can’t refuse for Luis Suarez.
The Uruguay frontman – whose handball on the line saved his country from a quarter-final exit to Ghana – has netted three times in South Africa.
Still only 23, he scored an incredible 49 times in 48 appearances last season and was valued at £25m before the World Cup.
Suarez has openly declared his admiration for Manchester United, along with Barcelona, and Sir Alex Ferguson has a firm interest in the forward.
But following his impressive displays in South Africa, Ajax claim even £25m wouldn’t be enough to convince them to sell and could want up to £10m more.
A club source said: “It is only natural to have an increase in the valuation because of the tournament he has had.” (Daily Mirror)
Luis Suarez is a goal machine, albeit in the Dutch Eredivisie, but anyone belittling this feat may do well to remember a certain Ruud Van Nistlerooy. Clearly it would be churlish to make comparisons between the two it is however true that the Uruguayan international has a great deal to offer and will surely leave the Amsterdam club before too long, after all anyone with an ounce of talent is soon whisked away from Holland for pastures new.
The 23 year old will of course be best known for his handball on the line that cost Ghana a place in the World Cup Semi-Finals but he did also score three goals, including a cracker against South Korea. His record of 49 goals from 48 games last season is pretty phenomenal and its no wonder that Sir Alex Ferguson appears to be interested in the former Nacional striker.
The Old Trafford boss would dearly love another prolific finisher to take some weight off Wayne Rooney’s shoulders and perhaps there is a chance that Suarez could be a good foil for the England man although perhaps they are in some ways too similar in stature.
Will, or indeed can, Manchester United afford to make such a hefty bid though?
