Should Real Madrid meet Liverpool’s £30m valuation of Steven Gerrard (or negotiate the price down a little), any deal could see either Fernando Gago or Rafael van der Vart move in the opposite direction according to reports. 24-year-old Gago is a huge prospect and any swap would mean little money changing hands. Van der Vart is less highly thought of at the Bernabeu, meaning he could arrive at Anfield along with some much needed cash. (Independent)

It does seem that Real Madrid are beginning to scale back their attempts to snap up Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard but the idea that the La Liga club could make an offer that included Dutch attacking midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart or their defensive midfielder Fernando Gago as part of an exchange may just get Roy Hodgson thinking again.

Gago’s inclusion in any deal would seemingly be connected to the possibility of his fellow countryman Javier Mascherano leaving for Inter Milan because the Real Madrid man is a very similar type of player to the Argentine captain.

Should the Spanish giants come up with an offer that includes the fee requested and either of these two, or perhaps less cash and the choice of either international then the Merseyside club may start to consider offers. Maybe an offer worth £45m, I.e. the £30m fee for Gerrard and either of these two players, is one that is too good to turn down for a 30 year old player?

Steven Gerrard has been very quiet on the whole saga, which may be just as well, and last term was possibly his worst in a Liverpool shirt. There is no doubting the quality the Anfield skipper possesses but one wonders also if he may be moving towards considering a new challenge after a decade plus in the club’s starting eleven.

Would Liverpool fans consider any offer of cash or either player as a deal worth accepting?
