Jun 14, 2010 - Cape Town, South Africa - GIORGIO CHIELLINI of Italy during the FIFA World Cup 2010 soccer match between Italy and Paraguay at the Green Point Stadium.

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Juventus centre back Giorgio Chiellini as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to strengthen his Old Trafford defence. With Rio Ferdinand suffering with niggling injuries and poor form and Nemanja Vidic consistently linked with a move away from the club, the United boss is looking for new additions that can help solidify their back line.

Juventus are in a period of transition after a particularly poor season last term which saw three managers take the Turin club’s helm and finishing in seventh place. New boss Luigi Delneri is looking to make wholesale changes and may feel that if a decent bid came in for the Italian defender then he may well accept and use the funds to re-invest in squad building, after all the Serie A club conceded an amazing 56 goals last term, only five other sides let in more than the Old Lady of Italian football.

The 25 year old is highly regarded and is usually a solid and determined customer but his poor form continued at the World Cup where he was unable to stop Marcello Lippi’s side from crashing out at the group stage, all pointing to a player in need of a new challenge, and perhaps Man United can oblige.

Finances may be tight at the Premier League side, with debts soaring, however Ferguson has been promised funds to bring in new players and a move for the £18m rated Pisa born man would be a wise one.
