Anfield full back heads for Florence.

Liverpool have agreed a fee to sell left-back Emiliano Insua to Italian club Fiorentina.
The Argentine defender has left Liverpool’s training camp in Switzerland and is travelling to Italy to discuss personal terms.
The 21-year-old arrived at Anfield in January 2007 from Boca Juniors and played 62 games, scoring just once.
New Reds boss Roy Hodgson may now look to recruit a left-back after Fabio Aurelio also left the club in June.
“A deal has been struck with Fiorentina, we wish him well for the rest of his career and thank him for his time spent at Liverpool,” Hodgson said.
“I am expecting him to join Fiorentina next week.” (BBC Sport)
So the deal has been done, much as we had reported it earlier in the week, and one wonders how hard Roy Hodgson tried to keep the young Argentine at the club. Emiliano Insua is a good prospect and would surely be a player the club would have wanted to keep given the lack of left back alternatives.
Of course the speculation will now turn to who the Merseyside club looks to sign to replace the 21 year old and again a lot will depend on how much cash the former Fulham boss is given to bring in additions to his Anfield squad.

i heard a rumour that we were gona chase Paul Konchesky, not so sure about that one, either way we need to buy a new left back some names that could be raised are Capdevilla, Figueroa, Taiwo, Kolarov (unlikely), Drenthe, Salcido, and probablly my choice as a cheap option as well would be Nadir Bel Hadj if he hasnt already left Pompey.

+1 for Bel Hadj… was very impressed by his performances last season, and with him on the left and Glen on the right we’ll be giving the team great width if they’re allowed to foray forward (something we’ve lacked for many years now).

We need 2 left backs now. Liked the look of taiwo at the world cup and figueroa is a good choice to compete with him. Newshound isn’t a very good name considering Purslow did this deal and as it was already set up before he joined hodgson had no say in it. Italian league will suit insua better, you can get away with a major lack of pace in a lot of leagues…just look at Voronin!

If we were in theory to get someone like Belhadj we would need to get faster centre backs than Skretl and Carra. Because they couldn’t cover the team playing so high on the flanks. Or maybe Roy will play 5 at the back with two high running wing backs…. kind of covers Johnson’s poor defending and allows his rampaging runs…. I think if we aren’t landing Figeroa from Wigan that Roy is thinking of playing Agger on the left, he did do well there last season at the end and actually looks good going forward too. Would also help our set pieces having him and Skretl there for heading strength. But was just a thought.

Anon 11.21 insua isn’t even close to being our best young talent for your information. Just because he is the only young talent you have seen doesn’t mean a thing. Our youngsters were only given a chance if necessity called for it(insua’s case Aurelio, Dossena and Agger injured at once), if they fit the totally rigid system and if they had a price tag to be justified. Anybody that watched reserve games regularly would know that Nemeth, pacheco, kelly, Darby, san jose and Ayala are much better talents unfortunately we lost san jose and another left back with better potential(buchtmann) through lack of opportunity due to a ridiculously huge squad with a lot of inferior players taking away their chances. Just behind that crop is the next equally exciting group including Gulacsi, dalle valle, amoo, eccleston and mavinga. Don’t talk about things you know nothing about, stick to your own club’s pages

#1 – Skrtel Should be the number 1 Right Centre-Back as Carragher has got too old and hasnt got speed.
#2 – Taiwo Should be brought in but if not either Bridge or Figueroa.
#3 – Mascherano should be sold as we can tell that he does not deserve to be at the club any longer, I think a Swap could be made with Inter bringing Balloteli and Cambiasso to Liverpool or Straight Sell for 30mil and bring Banega.
#4 – Maxi should be given a chance down the wing as I think Kuyt hasent got speed and slows the game down.
#5 – Jovanovic or bring in Turan or Mata and stick Jovanovic up front.
#6 – Jovanovic should stick up front or push him to the left and bring in Balloteli in Mascherano deal or buy 1 of – Huntelaar/Suarez/L.Fabiano/Gervinho/Remy.

Agree with anon 11.55 there is a much more worrying underlying sidestory to this transfer. We were told that no players would be sold until the new manager had a chance to look at the squad, I don’t personally rate insua but hodgson sounded like he was impressed with him in training and the decision definitely wasn’t made by him. Purslow is suddenly calling the shots with football matters and as the deals are reportedly done before hodgson’s appointment the money not appearing from the transfers will no doubt be explained by saying that the deals started before broughton’s statement don’t count.

All we need to is stick someone in who can kick a ball with their left foot and is respectable when it comes to defending unlike the guy on the opposite wing, then we can use that 6m on other attacking talent. I also do not understand why Roy is ignoring Turans cry towards liverpool to take him.

Insua didn’t have the pace for the premier league (not for a top team anyway) Goodluck in Italy our kidder, i don’t think he’ll need luck this boy is good but not quick enough for me.
It has to be Figueroa at left back with a prospect as cover. I’d like Momo Sissoko back in for the departing Javier Mascherano (not Poulsen who is being linked currently ith us).
Riera needs to go (gives possesion away too easily), Insua is going (too slow) ,Degen (sick note) Benny (got a bout of blue) , Mascherano (want’s an easy league), El Zhar (wants first team footy) Voronin (Dynamo needed more dynamics
, Cavalieri (need to play footy and hasn’t got a chance as Pepe is amazing)
Out
Benny £6m (banked), El Zhar £2m, Voronin £1.8m (banked), Cavalieri £2.5m, (which is around £25m + the £30m that we can get fom the Javier Mascherano sale is around £55m
Riera £6m, Insua £6m, Degen (i’ll take £1m
In
Turan £15m, Momo £!0m, Figueroa £7m Loic Remy or Brian Ruiz £12m, Joe Cole free, Paul Schaner free and it leaves over £10m to stregthen the youth prospects or what ever Christian Purslow or Roy the Hodgson decide
This still leaves Babel and Lucas at the club If Banega was to come we’d have to chip off Lucas (which i’d be inclined to do)

We have already sold San Jose for 1.5M, Benayoun for 5.5M and now Insua for 6M.
That is 13M right there. Now all we need to do is ship Lucas out for 4M, Degen for 1M, El zhar for 1M, and Plessis for 1M and we’ll have 20M.
Then we can put in a bid for Fabio Coentrao – the Benfica LWB. He’s absolute quality, very young still, a proper Portugese International and a solid defender.
He should be number 1 priority – although he would come with a hefty price tag – around 20M I think.

Hodgson has said that the players involved in the world cup won’t be used in the early rounds of the europa league, that it would be stupid to jeopardise the premier league campaign by throwing them into action before they have enough training and rest under their belts. Agree with this decision totally, he has recognised straight away the league is our priority and is the important thing to the club’s long term future. The self serving thing to do would be to want the europa league on your cv and the first trophy for your job security. We shouldn’t need to put our first team out for mickey mouse opposition and decisions like this that puts faith in our squad and youngsters just breeds confidence and team spirit.

kermit,
i d be having the midfield trio of lucas gerrard and aquilani this season, dont think mascherano is even needed, plus he has one foot in milan and hasnt been answering roy s phone calls. though if masch leaves i would expect another strong holding midfielder to be signed, a holding midfield playmaker would be something i would prefer as opposed to just a defensive tackler, someone who can control the play and be the starting point for our attacks as well as being defensively solid, love to get xabi alonso back , dont think it will happen though
but a midfield trio of alonso holding behind aquilani and gerrard would be my perfect midfield
left wing isnt looking so much of a problem now with riera looking likely to stay and jovanovic also
right wing isnt much of a problem though a bid for chile s alexis sanchez for about 12 million would be something i would consider
then the signing s of remy 12 million, wickham 8 million , moses 5 million and figueroa 7 million would complete my signings

p.p.s. i wish people would have more respect for roy than to call him woy
its like even liverpool fans are belittling him even before he starts to take the reigns, just because he has a speech impediment doesnt make hima bad manager
i think he is good with his players unlike benitez and i expect players like babel that need an arm round them from time to time will flourish under him

Warren Bloggs - July 18th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
Evening Donovan, Retry, Lewis and everyone.
Interesting news I think that Roy has claimed that all ‘World Cup players’ may be rested. He also stated that it will give ‘new signings’ the ideal opportunity to prove themselves, therefore, we can expect a handfull of new additions and subsequent departures during that time. Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez are not expected back for a couple of weeks I beleive, or possibly less. Therefore, it will be a long wait before Mascherano is sold seeing as Hodgson is intent on talking him round, a valiant suggestion but one that will end in Mascherano leaving to Inter Milan.
News today coming out of Italy is that we COULD be interested in Juventus’ Christian Poulsen, a good player albeit an older player, who could be a stop-gap replacement for Mascherano at as little a price as £6m. Insua, San Jose, Benayoun, Aurelio, Duran and Mikhailov have already been moved on and it looks as if Cavalieri, Ayala, El Zhar, Mascherano, Plessis, Riera and possibly Nemeth as well will be joining them, leaving us with a very depleted squad.
Although, the players we have been linked with do leave me with real hope that we will again be a force next summer. I would not take it for fact if Hodgson says there is ‘no news’ or he rejects a question concerning a speculated player, after all he is hardly going to come out and say ‘ we want him and him’ is he? Remember when the BBC team asked him if he would be new manager, his answer was ‘ I know nothing more then you do’, about a week later he was appointed. The same could be for Joe Cole, Loic Remy or anyone.

Could Joe Cole really be about to sign for Liverpool, it would be a coup indeed, and now that it looks likely that a move to Tottenham is no longer on that basically leaves us and Arsenal still fighting for his signature. Manchester United have not followed up their interest, nor have Manchester City after they bought David Silva from Valencia.
Loic Remy could be joining him, as could Paul Scharner from Wigan Athletic. Paul Koncheskey will not be coming to Liverpool however, Hodgson tried numerously to move him on at Fulham and although he of course respects him he does not rate him. Wayne Bridge could come in dirt-cheap but he is wildly over-rated as are most English players.

Donovan-was gonna send out a search party lol can’t agree with you about insua i’m afraid m8 personally would have kept him for a year as understudy to see if his positional sense would improve enough to cover for his lack of pace but never been a big fan of his, always frustrated me that he got opportunity yet the consistently better reserve performers didn’t. Don’t like the way it was done though if hodgson wanted to keep him then we should have done. I am loving all the reports about joe cole coming hope they are right. Think we would have missed yossi massively from the squad with his ability to play either flank or his best position behind Torres getting cole would cover all those positions equally well. Have always thought spurs just seems the perfect fit for him but we are being touted as favourites now, would be a massive coup for hodgson so fingers crossed on that one!

You’re right- The Hodge probably will play a 4-4-2. I can’t see how he’s going to fit both Gerrard and Aquilani into it though. We have a problem similar to the Gerrard-Lampard combination for England.
The only option would be to play Stevie up with Nando. Personally, I’d love to see Gerrard playing in midfield, box to box where he can lead the team. I’m not keen on him having his back to goal like last season.

tintaal that has been something that i have been wondering about also, how to play aquilani and gerrard in a four four two, unless gerrard goes to right midfield, but not sure i can see that happening even though he is very dangerous there
he ll adapt 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1, with one of them playing off torres and one of them in midfield but not as a defensive midfielder like when we have masch and lucas there a bit like the shape of my team above

He was probably checking out Strømsgodsets left back and their striker talent, Marcus Pedersen, but he should have been at Sør Arena in Kristiansand to check out their young talent Christer Kleiven. He has one of the highest percentage in effectivness on goal. I know it is only the Norwegian League, but Hogdson does love Norwegian players and those three might fit in as squad members and supersubs.
