New French boss wonders who he CAN pick. Just Fontaine is available.
The French Football Federation has suspended all 23 members of France’s World Cup squad for their next game.
New France coach Laurent Blanc requested that no member of the squad be selected for a friendly against Norway in Oslo on 11 August.
France failed to win any of their three group games in South Africa and scored one goal.
The campaign was marked by bitter infighting and a one-day training strike by the players. (BBC Sport)
Will this help? Probably not. There is no doubting that the French team did their country a great disservice in South Africa but will preventing them from taking part in a friendly in Norway really have the required effect? Clearly if the FFF were really looking to punish the players involved in that debacle then they could have suspended them from a Euro Qualifier, but then this would of course result in one UEFA sanction of another.
Laurent Blanc probably didn’t imagine his opening game as national team manager would be quite like this. Raymond Domenech is probably secretly rubbing his hands in glee in the safe house he is no doubt holed up in.
