St James Park boss secures deal to sign former England man.
Newcastle United look set to pip rivals Sunderland to the signing of defender Sol Campbell on a free transfer.
The former England international is out of contract after his deal with Arsenal ran out this summer.
But despite interest from the Black Cats and Scottish giants Celtic, Campbell appears to have plumped for a move to the newly promoted Magpies.
The 35-year-old is due to arrive in the north east on Tuesday morning for a medical before completing the move.
Campbell could become Newcastle manager Chris Hughton’s third summer signing following the arrivals of Dan Gosling and James Perch from Everton and Nottingham Forest respectively. (BBC Sport)
So there you have it. As reported some time ago on CaughtOffside, Sol Campbell has reached an agreement to join Newcastle United. Chris Hughton is quietly bringing in solid signings as opposed to asking Mike Ashley for big money and perhaps this is a wise way to deal with promotion to the top flight.
There seems no need for the club to break the bank as they appear to have a squad more than capable of staying up in the top tier, if however they wished to force a top ten finish in their first season back then of course they would need to fork out more.
Sol Campbell proved last term that he still has a season or two in the tank. He impressed many with his performances at the Emirates and definitely has the fitness and determination to make an impact at St James’ Park.
