Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson wants Aston Villa midfield general Stiliyan Petrov as the shock replacement for transfer-seeking Javier Mascherano.
Hodgson admires the Bulgarian star’s style and is ready to pay around £7 million for him as he looks to cash in on Argentinian Mascherano by selling him to Inter Milan coach Rafa Benitez.
The Kop are looking to land both Petrov and right back Luke Young in a surprise double raid as they try to bring in seasons professionals for a demanding campaign.
Petrov, 30, is one of the Premier League’s most respect operators and a key man for Martin O’Neill who brought him to Villa from Celtic where he was also a legend.
The Bulgarian star is aware of the Liverpool interest and could be keen on a move to Anfield – although Villa are desperate to keep their squad together despite so many being wanted men.
Hodgson wants a proven midfield schemer to play an anchor role in the Liverpool side. He expects Mascherano to move on, which would leave just Brazilian Lucas Leiva for that position – with Xabi Alonso never properly replaced. (Daily Mirror)
Now don’t get me wrong. Stiliyan Petrov is a good player and has got steadily better over the past two seasons at Villa Park but clearly if you sell as crucial a player as Mascherano and presumably do so for at least£25m then it seems odd (or should we say underhand) of the Liverpool money men to then only give enough funds to put in a bid for the 30 year old Bulgarian.
Perhaps this is the kind of thing Roy Hodgson should get used to. Tom Hicks and George Gillett have saddled the club with so much debt that the former Fulham boss will have to work his magic in the transfer market picking up players for far less than those he has to offload.
Clearly Martin O’Neill will fight tooth and nail to keep Petrov, a player who he brought to the club from Celtic where he was a big success. At least the new Anfield boss would be capturing a player who is well versed in Premier League football and is always going to give you 100% but perhaps he is not the most logical replacements for the want-away Argentine.

Is Mascherano really crucial? Found this on another site:
“Over the last three years, Liverpool have won 54% of the Premier League games in which he has featured. Without him, their success rate rises to 65%. Predictably, Liverpool have scored significantly more goals per game (2.25 v 1.88) without a player who has netted just one league goal in Liverpool colours.
That Mascherano is not a match-winner is no surprise, but the real shock lies in the statistic that although Liverpool concede fewer goals with him screening the defence, they have lost 19% of the Premier League games in which he has played, as opposed to 4% without him. That suggests a significant number of 1-0 defeats in which Mascherano offered little or nothing going forward.
His supporters might point to the statistic that Mascherano completed more tackles in the Premier League than any other player last season, but the very fact that the second player on that list is the utterly-unheralded Wigan midfielder Mohamed Diame negates that claim. As does the fact that Mascherano had the worst disciplinary record of any player in the top flight. He certainly makes tackles, but he mistimes enough for it to be a problem”

I honestly don’t see the fascination with Banega, yes he has undoubted talent, but what we need at the moment is someone who has premiership experience and does not need nurturing, therefore that is why i believe we should sign Stephen Ireland.
As stated in the above previous post we don’t need a defensive midfielder, we need a box to box midfielder and we have that in Gerrard and dare i say it Lucas and if we could add Ireland to that we would have a spectacular midfield which would work from Defence to Attack.

i am sure pachecho will get ten to fifteen games this season, roy will definately have been watching the u19 championships and will have taken note
petrov is a decent footballer and much like what roy did at fulham where he primarily signed already mature players , seasoned permier league perfromers like duff, i think he is up to his old tricks here
i see no problems with the addition of petrov to the squad, he would be a useful addition although for the same money there are perhaps other better options available, that being said i wouldnt be too saddened if we do sign petrov as masch s replacement , as petrov is more of a 4-4-2 holding midfielder and a much better passer of the ball than masch. not a bad move quiet, and perhaps a subdued signing that could well prove to be an effective one
leaving us with four to five central midfelders, gerrard aquilani petrov lucas and shelvey
i dont think peopleshould be knocking signings like this, we can t be expecting to sing felipe melo or ramires or essien and getting a top class centre forward
i think it hints at roys footballing philosphy of creating a team rather than a collection of stars

Right we’re not going to get Banega, nor are we gonna get Turan. Get fucking over it. We have no money, we have to cut our cloth. If we sell Masch for 25m, there isn’t a snowballs chance in the yanks giving it all back. We’ll be lucky if Roy gets 10m from it

All these ‘experts’ goin on about Banega.. He’d be kicked to the curb in the league in his first season and his transfer fee wouldnt be fair, Petrov is an absolute steal at 7mil.
However i personally would try land Flamini as he’s proven in the league, France’s best midfielder and available for the right money which wud probably still be cheaper than Banega.. who’s never played in the league, doesnt speak english and (not to stereotype) but wud probably end up a mercenary when whoever wins next seasons champions league comes callin..

to anon above, what is wrong with the signing of a seasoned professional like petrov , proven in the premier league very underrated and understated much like roy himself, someone who wouldntneed to adapt to the british game, nor the country for that matter, someone who will fit in seamlessly is a model professional and will hit the ground running, i think petrov is the mainstay of villa s success without getting the plaudits he deserves, barry left villa still held their own , milner had a super season along side him last year , only able to beause petrov had his back.
i wouldnt knock this signing , i think it could be a shrewd and very wise signing from roy who is keen to get us up and running from day one in the premier league

Seriously though in an ideal world we’d get them both, but because of messr’s Gillett & Hicks we have to aim at bargain basement level. If Woy does have some cash floating around he should be going for the likes of Ireland, De Jong, Bridge. Although I can’t see Citeh letting De Jong go.

I wouldn’t mind Petrov if he wasn’t at 7 million but he is 30 and may have only 2 maybe 3 season left in him which isn’t good in the long run. If can’t get Banega in this formation then atleast get someone younger than 29/28 who can still have a good few years in them.
If Roy does get Petrov then obviously i will back them both and wish Petrov well and if by any chance i’m proven wrong and he does a fantastic job in playing for us then i will admit i was wrong.

i read that we are 3 players short to fulfill the eufa quota therefore, at this stage i think i would plump for the following LB-bridge or konchesky, CM -ireland or cattermole, CF-bent or C Cole and throw in SWP just for good measure

There was another contribution that we we’re gonna be taken over on July 15th or 16th and that it was all hush hush cos the manager ‘the new owners’ wanted to appoint was managing in the World Cup.
This is all bullshit. I will not believe that we have new owners until I see them sitting in Anfield at a press conference!!

The players I have mentioned coming in are the very least which should be expected as, according to the rumours, Roy has been given £10-15m to spend on top of player sales. Seeing as we have a £13m profit, if we go by the plans as shown above then we shall have a £23-28m to spend on more players.
In my opinion, we should either spend this on another defensive midfielder to give us some bulk and experience to the position seeing as Masch is going. Someone like Scott Parker would be good if he became available or, if not, Poulsen (okay, he’s not the best but he’s cheap and good enough).
Or we could use the money to add more firepower to the attack. Someone who is busy and plays just off the main striker would be good. Jovetic and Kieesling would fit into this position nicely. Or we could just get a proven striker in the form of Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
I have also heard rumours that Roy is plotting to hijack Man Shitty’s bid for James Milner. We could spend the remainder of our budget on him as he would be versatile enough to fit anywhere in our team and he would be a suitable potential Gerrard replacement when the time comes.
loading...
anonymous - July 29th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
If that is the case it would work quite nicely. We should not have any problems with a line up like that however that may not be the formation or rather that will most likely not be the formation

Warren Bloggs - July 29th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
Stylijan Petrov would be a good replacement, as I think Bailey does seem to understand why we would spend ’so little’ on a replacement. It has nothing to do with the yanks, they are no longer involved with the club, Broughton is our current Chairman. He stated in Roy’s first press conference that any money generatd from sales would be put striaght back into the team. Therefore, it is plainly obvious that Hodgson does not see a big-name replacement as neccesary. Instead, he is seeking experienced premier league players e.g. Petrov, Young, Figueroa, J.Cole etc. These are the players we can expect plus of course maybe a talented overseas player such as maybe Hamsik? I really like the player and we have now been linked with him, of course I know it is unlikely that he will come but he would he a very usefull addition. Now, I am fully aware with Gerrard, Aquilani and Cole aready at the club there is not a pressing need for an attacking midfielder, but at Napoli he has regularly played on the left as a further creative and attacking outlet, very much in the mold of Everton’s Mikel Arteta.
Now, although I would like to see Petrov playing for Liverpool I still think Muntari in part-exchange with Mascherano plus say £15m would be the ideal. This would leave us with near £30m (maybe more should we offload Maxi Rodriguez, Degen, Cavalieri amongst others). Then spend £20m on Hamsik and with the left-over money snap up Young and Figueroa. Further sales i.e. Maxi, Cavalieri and possibly Babel (if he does not have a future at the club) can be used to bring in a striker (£10m or so).

you have some great players in gerrard, torres, reina and great talent in babel, aqualani, pachesco.
i would love to swap squads. buying drenthe
reina
johnson—agger—skertel—-DRENTHE
——————-masch———————–
rodriguez———————————javanovic
————–cole———–gerrard———
———————torres—————————
compare that to
van dar saar
silva—-vidic—rio—-evra
valencia—-anderson—-carrick—nani
——rooney——–berbatov———–
evra and rooney would be the onlt players i would take to liverpool. (although if i am honest with cole and gerrard behind torres would it be so bad to leave rooney??)
to me that is a premiership winning team, just need Drenthe…..
with aqualani, ngog, babel, lucus, carra, wilson, mavinga etc
i just don’t understand why macherano being sold is such a big deal??? he’s a def midfield and lets be honest is very one dimensional.
i mean look aqualani, (who was supposed to be the future of italian football a few years ago), if he can stay fit will be amazing. and pacheco is special.
reina
johnson—agger—skertel—-DRENTHE
——————-gerrard———————–
rodriguez———————————javanovic
————–cole———–aqua/pacheco———
———————torres—————————
if i were liverpool fans i would be very happy. should be a good season. please understand i love unites but no one wants liverpool to be 7th…it should be the only true big teams in the premiership that should be winning it……obviously unites more so that liverpool…

The positive thing about Roy Kermit, is that he is a very good man manager, which i don’t think we have had in a very long time!! So maybe, just maybe he might be able to turn an average player into a very good player.
We will just have to wait and see!

and even as a liverpool fan i have to admit rooney is one my favourite footballers, i think valencia is athe best right sided player in the epl, best delivery anyway, its a shame for you that nani can t seem to do as well on the left as the right as he has the making of a very good player
but sayng that i dont think it would take much to make utd strong either, signing defour to shore up the middle and a creative attacking midfielder any of ozil hamsik, but my personal choice would be diego of juve because he is likely to come cheap

Petrov’s a steady player but nothing about him excites me and he has the odd mistake or two in him but I think this is a sign of what Hodgson might have to contend with whilst the yanks are still the owners, he might possibly need to use the money from the Mascherano sale to get a replacement for him along with a new left back and possibly one more attacking player.

Far too many Championship Manager kids on this site! It’s quite simple really. Roy’s mission is to get Liverpool back in the Champions League – not to win the league or sign ‘wonderkids’. Therefore he is shrewdly building a TEAM of experienced (if unspectacular) Premier league platers to give us the maximum chance of securing points against teams we really should beat.
Next season is all about qualifying for the Champions League. Maybe next Summer we can have marquee signings but now is not the time and nor do we have the money or kudos to attract top talent. We may be Liverpool but we are a broke Europa league Liverpool. Have faith in Roy! Look at his record at Fulham and enjoy watching our team actually pass and move again.

CHEERS KERMIT, but seriously rio isn’t the player he was, think agger and skertel could be great together…and van der saar is a real issue. i don’t get why we havent spent some proper money on a quality keeper. i would take david james in a flash….as you rightly said its the centre of the park which is bad. i seriously quite worried if we don’t get some decent players in…..

He’s been great at Villa the last couple of seasons doing an outstanding job replacing Barry last year, so defefensively one really can’t complain about his contributions! Must say though that I had wished for a better passing player (then again that wasn’t Mascherano’s strongest aspect either), so why not go for Van Der Vaart, and you’ll get a great defensive player with a great passing foot and plenty of experience pretty damn cheap at the Bianconeri’s summersale?

Kermit – I think you are obsessed with Lucas lol, he didnt play any better than Aquilani did. Incase you havent noticed, with Gerrard out of the team, Aquilani is considered as the danger man – which is why he constantly had about 2/3 players round him – he had no space what so ever and still managed to create a few chances.
Kelly was really good at RB, and Spearing had a decent game, as for Ngog – the guy is 21 and is turning in to a promising striker. He should be starting in all the Cup games like Carling and F.A. this season to really bring him on, as well as the Europa – it will take the burden off nando.
Also, if Amoo works on his end product we will have the next Aaron Lennon within our youth ranks – can only be a good thing!

kermit I rate Lucas to and as for spearing I think that is Gerrards influence. the Lads did ok and pleased for Ngog. Good team performance and that is all that matters as well as a win .

i personally like what roy has done in terms of additions to the club. he has added talented team players who with sometime to develop chemistry will make a very good team. Obviously everyone likes to see the big name players coming in, but thats just unrealistic considering what an awful job my fellow americans have done. I would like to see liverpool get petrov with a portion of the mascherano money and let lucas learn a little bit from him so in a few years he can step in and be a big difference maker and provide the offense that mascherano couldn’t.

First game of the season Guys and match fitness isn`t quite there so we cant really judge players alot but what we can say is i think at the moment we are playing the same system that we played last season and Lucas has the confidence of his team mates as well as manager as well as I hope our 2nd goalie stays, The brazilian has been an unsung Herofor us. Never ever winged and done well when called to duty. 5mil is too cheap.
Lucas valuation is 12mil for me and Ngog 7 mil taking into consideration age. Hey but thats just me

btw Aquilini was bought to play a deeper role if anyone has not noticed but due to his injuries and that he is too soft in the middle as well as him trying to adapt to the english style of footy we have played him as supporting striker or a floater. i think once he masters that deeper role where spearing was playing it will be better for the team.

spearing 5.5 looked nervous and out of his depth a little in the first half got better second half
lucas 7 did a good job in midfield kept things ticking over
amoo 5 great pace but he is too raw for this level first touch let him down a lot
jova 6 had little time and space to work in down the left, some nice footwork though
aquilani 4 this was the biggest disappointment for me, should have been on the ball a lot more and dominating the game

EL SANTO
Well Lads,I am not certain about the signing of Styilian Petrov?
Yes,he is experianced and yes,he is a ball winner.But,he is 30!
I know for a fact that he only has around 2 years of great footy left in him,and 2 years will pass without a doubt, and they will pass quite quickly in my opinion.
I think the man for the job is either Éver Banega or Lee Cattermole,I’m sure about the price though? Maybe Cattermole would cost us £12m and Banega will cost us £10m?
Personally, I want Banega,He is not a high-profile player and he won’t cost a fortune. He can pass like Xabi Alonso, tackle like Javier Mascherano and dribble like Steven Gerrard.
I think a player with that many values is definatly worth signing.
And the best thing is he will only cost £10m!
Also , I think Carlos Salcido will sign for £3m for the left-back spot.
Summary
(My predictions)
IN=
Milan,free
J.Cole,free
Wilson,£2m
Shelvey,£1.7m
Salcido,£3m
Banega,£10m
(and a young Englisg striker),£8m
TOTAL=24.7m

Looks like inter milan will want to pay only 15M + Sulley Muntari. I think its not fair. if 15M + Cambiasso may be Liverpool could negotiate.
If NOT, then Liverpool may take cash only for 25M – 30M for Mascherano.
Then We can buy a good DMF like Lassana Diara or Ever Banega etc. Both of them have a good pace, can pass well too. Better than Mascherano i think.
According to some website, looks like we will sign Maynor Figueroa. But I personally think we better sign either Wayne Bridge, Fabio Coentrao or Carlos Salcido.
As for Dani Pacheco case, I think we still can convince him to play at Liverpool by giving Him chance to play 2 upfront, Pacheco and Torres. Since Torres is still injured, we can pair Pacheco with Jovanovic/Ngog upfront.
How much money does the club left if Mascherano go to Inter?
The club will give = 15M
Mashc price = 25M
Insua = 5M
Benayoun = 6M
Riera = 5M ==TOTAL =56M
————————-
Estimate money spend before transfer deadline :-
CB:
Danny Wilson = 3+M
Left-Back:
Salcido = 3M
Bridge/Maynor Figueroa = 6M

Instead of petrov i’d go for Gago. With Khedira joining Madrid, i don’t see him being a part of their plans. He is undoubtedly talented but may cost more than 10 million.

Gosh No ! ! !. Getting Petrov would be a disaster… banega still remains the best choice… Or we could get Scharner for free as a back up for Lucas who could be 1st choice.. I wouldn’t want LFC becoming another AC MILAN….
Would highly prefer:
———————–Reina——————–
Johnno—-Skrtel——–Agger—–Figueroa
———–Lucas/Banega—–Gerrard————
————————-Aquilani———————
————–Joe Cole——–Jovanovic——–
————————-Torres———————-
Crossing has not been our biggest trait in recent times and our forwards aren’t greatest headers. Passing and moving is far more attractive and result-yielding with aforementioned players… This lineup is more than capable of holding on to the ball and spreading play as Cole and Jovanovic are both capable of playing behind striker and on wings with Aquilani and Gerrard waiting to spot any open space and blast their way through… This would By far be the most flamboyant lineup we could put on the pitch….

liverpool news –
mascerano will be moving to inter milan for around 25 million pounds.
dirk kuyt would be intrested in a inter move but it ruluctant to state a desire for a move as he does not want to damage his relationship with the liverpool fans.
turan is a possibilty but liverpool may have to wait untill next summer to get their man due to the stance taken by galatasary – turan would love a liverpool move – muntari would welcome a move to liverpool with interkeen to let him loose for around 8 million.

If we do sell Mascherano the disloyal dimwit, we should get no less than £35M as on his day he is the best holding midfielder in the world.
And Hodgson needs to start remembering he is at Liverpool not Fulham anymore, Petrov of A Villa? L Young Of A Villa? He should be looking at quality, young, hungry, experienced players who can take the club forward.
IF and when he sells Mascherano, He should bring in two Holding Midfielders to come and compete with One another for the defensive mid role in the side.
The two we should bring in : 1st Bring back Momo Sissoko Of Juventus for £10-£12M
And 2nd to bring in M Flamini Of A.C Milan for £10-£12M
Both of these players are quality, class, no the premiership and all have shone in the premiership and would improve the quality and class at club.
Here are the best Holding/Defensive midfielders in the world at the moment:
Mascherano Of Liverpool Essien Of Chelsea M Sissoko Of Juventus
L Diarra Of Real Madrid Yaya Toure Of Man City X Alonso Of Real Madrid
De Rossi Of Roma Cambiasso Of Inter S Busquets Of Barcelona
M Sissoko Of Toulouse S Mbia Of Marseille N De Jong Of Man City
M Diarra Of Real Madrid Tiago Of Juventus C Makele Of PSG
G Inler Of Udinese W Palacios Of Tottenham M Senna Of Villareal
A Song Of Arsenal D Zokora Of Seville P Assuncao Of A Madrid
And Petrov and Poulsen are not in this calibre of players, so how the club are being linked with them i do not know.
And i am praying they are just rumours and not serious, we should sell Mascherano For no less than £35M or the only swap deal Hodgson should consider from Inter is Cambiasso + £25M for Mascherano, then use £12M to bring back M Sissoko From Juventus for £10-£12M and then use £13M on E Banega Of Valencia Or S Ireland Of Man City.

appledave in a midfield you would seriously play Lucas & Petrov over Aquilani? We are trying to win games, not, ‘don’t lose’ mentality… i say try Gerrard & Aquilani, Cole CF Torres ST Babel, Maxi Jovanovic on the wings, so what if we concede a goal or two, if we’re 4 – 0 up… we shot abandon the holding mid vs weak teams, Stoke, etc Gerrard can always drop back anyway.
