Cleverley to get taste of Premier League football this year in good deal for both Old Trafford and St James’ Park sides.
Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton is clearly working on a budget, but has conducted quite astute business in the transfer market so far. Dan Gosling, Sol Campbell and James Perch for just over £1m shows that one can scour the bargain basement and still come out with decent players.
The signing of Perch in particular shows that there is money to spend at Newcastle. Although rumours of a marquee signing such as Hatem Ben Arfa may well be wide of the mark, if the price is right, owner Mike Ashley is clearly willing to invest in the squad. This is most likely because he knows a Premier League side is a much more saleable asset than a Championship one, but it is still encouraging news for Magpies fans.
Newcastle have most recently been linked with a move for Manchester United youngster Thomas Cleverley, who has highly impressed on his club’s tour of the United States. The midfielder scored a deflected effort against Celtic as well as a sublime goal against the MLS All Stars.
If Cleverley can win a place in the Newcastle United first XI, he might yet get a chance at Old Trafford in the not too distant future. Furthermore, he might prevent Joey Barton from getting in the side. Everyone’s a winner!
