Emirates boss will have to think of alternative targets to solidify the Gunners defence.
Mark Hughes has crushed Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer’s Arsenal dream by telling the Aussie: ‘You’re going nowhere’.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has had a £2million bid for the 37-year-old rejected after identifying Schwarzer as the experienced pair of hands he needs to replace Manuel Almunia.
Schwarzer has also told Fulham chiefs he is keen to speak to Arsenal to realise his dream of playing Champions League football.
But Hughes said: “There is always interest in quality players and it is not my intention to allow the betters players leave the football club.” (Daily Mirror)
Arsenal target Per Mertesacker is staying at Werder Bremen , according to the Bundesliga outfit’s general manager.
“Per remains 100 percent committed to Werder!,” Klaus Allofs told the Bild. “I have already said this several times. Nothing has changed. Per and his advisers have so far not commented due to a request from us. ”
However, Allofs was less certain about the future of midfield maestro Mesut Ozil , who has been targeted by a number of clubs, including Manchester United , Arsenal and Real Madrid .
“Many clubs have expressed interest in him, but no concrete offers have been made,” he said.” If we get an offer, we will deal with it. Then anything is possible.” (IMScouting)
Arsene Wenger is desperately trying to snap up some more defensive options but appears to be missing out on a number of his prime targets. Having failed with a bid for Everton centre back Phil Jagielka is appears from these two sources that hopes of securing Australian keeper Schwarzer and impressive German international Mertesacker are dead in the water.
The Arsenal boss is urgently looking for a replacement keeper after appearing to have run out of patience with both Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski. A number of prospective custodians have been linked with a move to the Emirates and the Fulham man was perfect in many respects. He would have been pretty damn cheap and the north London club only really needs a short term option given the impressive young pair the club have in the likes of Vito Mannone and Wojciech Szczesny.
With the likes of William Gallas, Mikel Silvestre and Sol Campbell out the door the Gunners manager also made it clear he wanted at least one more centre back and he is a big admirer of Mertesacker but that deal seems to have been dealt a blow by Klaus Allofs.
Their are strong suggestions that Bosnian Emir Spahic is however on his way to the club so that will at least ease some concerns about the lack of alternatives in his back line.
