Following the introduction of the new Premier League rules, the pressure is on clubs to give their young stars more playing time this season. Here at Caughtoffside, we will be taking a look at some of the stars to watch out for, Arsenal’s Emmanuel Frimpong has been touted by Arsene Wenger as the next Michael Essien.
Position: Defensive Midfielder
Young defensive midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong could be set to feature for Arsenal this season, after manager Arsene Wenger was impressed by his pre-season performances.
Frimpong was born in Ghana and moved to England at the age of nine, making him available to play for both national sides. He joined Arsenal in 2003 at the age of 11, and has excelled in the youth teams, but is yet to make a senior appearance for the club.
He has featured heavily during Arsenal’s 2010/2011 pre-season games and was singled out for praise from his manager for his ball-winning skills and strength. Wenger is renowned for giving his young players a chance, and having been encouraged by Frimpong’s pre-season form, he is sure to give him a chance in the first team this term.
Frimpong has played for England at Under-16 and Under-17 levels but is now thought to favour an allegiance to Ghana. Wenger has rather fittingly hailed the midfielder as the next Michael Essien.
