Chris Hughton set to bring highly rated attacker to St James’ Park.
Sky Sports News understands that Newcastle are close to bringing in Marseille midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa on a season-long loan.
The Magpies have been strongly linked with the French winger all summer, with Chris Hughton keen to bolster his attacking arsenal.
It is felt that the squad needs added creativity if they are to hold their own back among England’s elite.
Ben Arfa would certainly fall into that category, even if he has no prior experience of life in the Premier League.
He has been billed as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects ever since he burst onto the scene at Lyon in 2004. (Sky Sports)
This signing, if completed, would be something of a coup. For some reason Didier Deschamps doesn’t appear to rate the former Lyon man very highly even though the tricky little attacker helped Marseille to their first Ligue 1 title in 17 years, during which the 23 year old started 27 of the 38 league games.
If he does indeed sign a season long deal then Marseille’s loss could well be Newcastle United’s gain. The talented intelligent midfielder has a great footballing brain and has been strongly linked with a move to some of Europe’e elite for a good few years now.
He has worked his way back into the national team reckoning and could well prove to be a very successful loan signing and one who may well do enough to persuade the Toon Army to make any such move permanent in the long run.
