Anfield battler set for exit and hopes for Catalan move after San Siro dream appears to collapse.
Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano would “love” to join Barcelona this summer, according to his Spanish representative.
Mascherano, 26, was strongly linked with a move to Barca last year, but no move was agreed and, having asked to leave Liverpool upon his return from the World Cup, he was expected to join Inter this summer.
However, Inter have indicated that they need to sell before they can fund a move for Mascherano and, with Barca potentially in the market for a replacement for Yaya Toure, agent Horacio Zandonadi hopes a deal can be agreed.
“The player and all of us would love him to be at the club,” he told COMRadio, a Catalan station. “The numbers are close to half what Barca were being asked to pay for Fabregas.
“He has not renewed his contract and they promised that this year they would help him leave. We’re talking about a much easier situation than last year.” (ESPN)
After Inter Milan intimated that they could not follow up interest in Javier Mascherano due to the sheer size of their current squad, Roy Hodgson will be keen on somehow selling the Argentine elsewhere and that is where Barcelona appear to come into the picture. The battling midfielder’s representative seems keen to push for such a move and Liverpool boss must want to rid the club of a player who has made it clear he wants to leave.
It would be counter productive to keep a player once his heart is elsewhere and the sale of the 26 year old was going to be used to fund other moves, such as for the Danish international Christian Poulsen. The fee the Catalan club is believed to be willing to pay is around £22m and if an offer of that size was made then I would imagine the Anfield side would take it.
One wonders if Mascherano would be a solid first choice starter at the Nou Camp, after all Yaya Toure left specifically because he couldn’t push Sergio Busquets out of the starting eleven, would the former West Ham man manage to do so?
