Deal finally struck to take Villa Park midfielder to Eastlands.
Aston Villa midfielder James Milner has agreed a deal to join Manchester City and will undergo a medical at Eastlands on Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.
The £18 million deal will also see City midfielder Stephen Ireland move in the opposite direction to Villa Park. (ESPN)
James Milner put in a fine display against West Ham on the weekend in what must have been a strange fixture to take part in. To play for your club knowing that you have in fact more or less left for pastures new could have resulted in a muted performance but credit to the England international, he played a blinder and scored a great goal.
Now a deal appears to have been agreed for what amounts to around £28m, assuming that Stephen Ireland is worth at least £10m, possibly more, in today’s transfer market. Aston Villa had no choice but to sell once it became clear the player wanted to leave and it was a move that could well have contributed to Martin O’Neill’s decision to leave the club.
The move gives caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald time to see if he can re-invest some of the fee in new additions and also brings a talented playmaker in Ireland to the club, with the Eastlands man looking to prove his doubters, like Roberto Mancini, wrong.
