Carlo Ancelotti has given the clearest indication yet that he would be keen on signing Jack Rodwell.
The Everton midfielder has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the past with reports that a £16m bid had been turned down last year.
And Ancelotti will have caused concern in the Goodison Park boardroom with his comment yesterday, in which he talked of his praise for the 19-year-old.
‘Rodwell of Everton is a good player,’ said the Chelsea manager, who is aware that his squad contains players nearer the end than the beginning of their careers. (Daily Mail)
So are Ancelotti’s words being taken out of context? Was the Chelsea boss simply stating an opinion rather than expressing an interest in making a new bid for the England Under 21 man? Carlo is a clever man he will have known what effect making such a statement would have and there is no doubt that the west London club would love to get hold of a player that many believe will be England captain in years to come. Sir Alex Ferguson is also monitoring the youngsters progress but luckily for David Moyes the teenager only recently signed a five year deal so isn’t likely to go anywhere just yet, and if indeed he does leave it will come at a hefty price.
The talented midfielder will play a big role at the Toffees this season and will be looking to continue his swift progress from starlet to seasoned professional and will hope that he can realise his ambitions at the Merseyside outfit but there must always be a fear at the heart of all Everton fans that a player of his calibre will one day leave, much as Wayne Rooney did, when the right offer comes in.
This is unless of course Moyes can get Everton back nearer the top four spots, a task made all the more difficult by the fact that Manchester City have leap frogged all and sundry due to their immense spending power. Tottenham to have the financial clout to help keep them up there amongst those fighting for a coveted Champions League spot whilst the Goodison Park outfit has to work with a far more restrictive budget. Over the past two seasons the club has sold players to the tune of £33m but have in that same time period only spent significant money on Marouane Fellaini and Johnny Heitinga, such is the vast spectrum of spending in the top tier.
Even the most optimistic and ardent Everton fan will probably admit that Rodwell will leave but will at the same time hope they get a season or two more out of him before he does inevitably leave.
