Fulham have asked for Arsenal striker Carlos Vela plus cash from the Gunners in exchange for Mark Schwarzer.

The two London clubs have reached deadlock in their negotiations because Arsenal are unwilling to match Fulham’s £4 million valuation of the 37-year-old goalkeeper.

Arsenal had a £2m bid rejected for Schwarzer in May and have not made a further offer, although it is understood that the two clubs are still in talks.

“They have different valuations of Schwarzer,” a source close to the transfer told Goal.com UK.

“Arsenal don’t want to pay the £4m that Fulham want but one possibility is a player exchange deal to push it through.”

It is understood that several Arsenal fringe players have been mentioned and Fulham, who are keen to bolster their forward ranks despite the signing of forward Moussa Dembele from AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday, have enquired about Vela among others.

Arsenal are likely to value the Mexican international far beyond a £2m makeweight, even though the 21-year-old is running out of time to make his mark at the club. (Goal.com)

This sounds like the ramblings of a mad scientist. Why the hell would Arsenal agree to such a deal? Yes they need a keeper fairly urgently but not to the extent that they will agree to this kind of swap. In what universe if the highly rated Mexican international, who competed at the summer’s World Cup, considered only worthy of being part of a deal to bring a very old Australian to the Emirates?

Hopefully Arsenal fans can sleep soundly as this is almost certainly a complete fabrication. Vela is now very much part of Arsene Wenger’s first team squad, clearly not as a regular starter, but at 21 he has great potential and is probably not even a player that the Gunners boss would consider offloading at this moment in time.

If this is really the type of deal needed to finally get hold of the Fulham keeper then Wenger may as well start looking elsewhere. Hell, he could start with a move for Stoke reserve keeper Asmir Begovic who is only 23 and a damn decent player and probably wouldn’t end up having to involve some mindless deal to capture.
