West Ham co-owner David Gold admits that the club would be forced to sell Matthew Upson if they received a substantial offer for the England defender.
The centre-half is out of contract at the end of the season and both Gold and fellow co-owner David Sullivan are wary that Upson could leave Upton Park on a free transfer.
Gold told the Daily Star: “We want to keep Matt here, but at the same time we know we may have to sell him if he tells us he doesn’t want to stay.
“We don’t want to let him leave the club for nothing. It’s a difficult balancing act and a dilemma for us.
“If someone came in and bid £6million or £7million for him, we would have to sell.” (Sky Sports)
Arsene Wenger is urgently looking for centre backs to help beef up the Gunners back line. West Ham are openly stating their intention to sell their England international defender, if you put two and two together, wouldn’t it be a smart idea for the Emirates boss to consider bringing back the former Arsenal man?
Yes he is 31 but he is very much at his peak and has a good few years left in the tank. He is a regular in the England set up and has barely missed a game in the past three seasons at Upton Park. The price is pretty good considering Wenger forked out £9m for the unknown Koscielny.
In his previous six years at the north London club he failed to get a look in but has progressed steadily since Arsene sold him to Birmingham in January 2003 and maybe now would be the right time to welcome him back into the fold.
He is a solid centre back and is as good as some names the club is reportedly linked to and helpfully adds to the homegrown quota.
