Arsenal have set their sights on Dutch international keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
The 27-year-old stopper has been linked with an Ajax exit this summer, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to make the player his new No.1 target as his search for a goalkeeper continues.
Stekelenburg impressed for Holland during the World Cup, helping the Dutch all the way to the World Cup final with a string of accomplished performances.
A product of the famed Ajax academy, Stekelenburg made his senior debut for the club in 2002. He has gone on to make 165 Eredivisie appearances, becoming a solid number one with European experience at the Amsterdam Arena.
Wenger has been keen to add another stopper to his ranks at the Emirates, and has been linked to Gianluigi Buffon, Mark Schwarzer and Federico Marchetti to name just three. (Give Me Football)
Wenger is also reportedly considering a move for Stekelenburg’s Ajax teammate Jan Vertonghen who was part of the Dutch giants quality centre defensive partnership with a certain Thomas Vermaelen who has of course been a major success at the Emirates since his move to the club last summer. Vertonghen also plays alongside Vermaelen in the Belgian national team set up.
Ajax are in financial dire straits and have admitted they could sell some of their squad before the transfer window closes as they look to make up for big losses incurred over the past few seasons. The club is hoping to negotiate their Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kiev.
The Arsenal boss is said to still be interested in signing both players even though they are now cup tied from Champions League action. Such is their desperation to bring in good quality recruits to boost their threadbare defence.
The pair are thought to be worth a combined valuation of around £22m, a fee the club can easily afford. Wenger stated on the clubs official website that they could well be looking to bring in more than one player before the end of the month, thus fuelling speculation of the possible move for the Ajax pair.
