HARRY REDKNAPP has told angry Spurs fans: “I’ve not signed the Yorkshire Ripper, I’ve signed a footballer.”
Boss Redknapp has created a storm by bringing William Gallas to White Hart Lane. The defender, pictured yesterday after meeting his new team-mates, quit bitter rivals Arsenal in a contract row.
But Redknapp said: “What has Gallas done? He is a footballer. It’s not the Yorkshire Ripper I am signing is it?
“It’s all cobblers, I have signed on a free transfer a very good player who wanted to play for Tottenham. He’s got the bottle to come here.
“He’s not done it for money. I think he could have earned a lot more money if he stayed at Arsenal, he could have gone to a couple of Italian clubs.” (The Sun)
So there you have it. The White Hart Lane side have NOT signed the Yorkshire Ripper. In all seriousness though, Harry makes a good point, Gallas is a good signing and I can see the majority of the Tottenham support giving him the backing he deserves. After all he is a vastly experienced performer and will greatly enhance a back line plagued with injury concerns.
Recent reports seem to state that Jonathan Woodgate could be forced to quit the game if the latest surgery on his groin injury is not a success. Ledley King has continuing knee problems and Michael Dawson and Sebastien Bassong as a pairing looked very poor against Young Boys. All of this led Redknapp into making an offer to out of contract Gallas, and it may well prove to be an excellent deal as the games start coming thick and fast, if indeed the club qualifies for the Champions League group stage.
