The Premier League hinted that it would consider taking action over Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s continued refusal to speak to the BBC.
Ferguson has a long-running disagreement with the broadcaster and has for years refused to be interviewed by them. There had been some talk that this season would mark a change in Ferguson’s attitude. Nonetheless, following Manchester United ‘s 2-2 draw at Fulham yesterday, Old Trafford assistant Mike Phelan was sent to speak to the BBC.
Subsequently, the Premier League issued a statement which hinted that action could be taken against Ferguson or Manchester United as a result.
It read, “The Premier League is disappointed that the BBC and Manchester United have, as yet, been unable to resolve the issue of Sir Alex Ferguson providing post-match interviews. We will, of course, continue to monitor the situation and offer any help deemed necessary by either party to try and help remedy the situation.
“However, this is a breach of Premier League rules and the board will consider the appropriate course of action at their next meeting scheduled for late September.” (IMScouting)
This could get interesting. Whilst it may well be part of the Premier League agreement that Sir Alex has to talk to the media rights holders, can you really make someone talk? Couldn’t he just turn up and answer questions using the same word regardless of what the question was? I.e. the word ‘Armadillo’ whatever the question addressed to the Man United boss.
This disagreement has been going on since 2004 when the BBC ran a documentary that was less than complimentary about Ferguson’s agent son Jason. Sir Alex is clearly a man you do not cross and he’s done well to keep this feud going for so long, but what can the Premier League really do?
What do United fans make of the whole situation?
