White Hart Lane boss interested in French international but not going to pay kings ransom to cover his crazy wages.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has conceded the chances of him luring Lassana Diarra to White Hart Lane are slim.
Spurs, who made William Gallas their second summer signing on Sunday, have been strongly linked with bringing another former Arsenalplayer back to London.
Combative Real Madrid midfielder Diarra enjoyed a two-year spell at Chelsea from 2005-2007 before making 13 appearances for Arsenal the following season.
The 25-year-old, who played under Redknapp during his brief time at Portsmouth in 2008, is thought to be deemed surplus to requirements under new Real coach Jose Mourinho.
However the Spurs boss, while reiterating his interest in Diarra, has cited wage demands as a likely stumbling block in the move.
“He’s on big, big wages at Real Madrid,” said Redknapp, who revealed Diarra’s agent had been in contact with Spurs’ chief scout. (Sky Sports)
This will be an issue for any player attempting to leave Real Madrid. There are about half a dozen big name players who will not get a look in at the Bernabeu and if they really value ambition over their wage then they would do well to consider taking a pay cut in order to fulfil their undoubted potential.
Would Diarra really prefer to rot on the bench at the La Liga giants, or perhaps even miss out on the bench as well, and draw an obscene salary or take a 20-30% pay cut to play first team football? Such is the impression that many, including myself, have about the modern day footballer, the odds are that most would prefer to ride out their contract and then try to leave for nothing, which would be a shame.
This could well be an issue that affects a good proportion of the Man City squad as we get nearer the closing of the transfer window. Redknapp has made it clear he wants the former Arsenal, Chelsea and Portsmouth man and I guess the ball is very much now in his court.
