MANCHESTER UNITED want Everton youngster Jack Rodwell – and will make a £20 million move to land him.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has put him back to the top of his wish-list after failing to land other midfield targets and despite the fact the player has signed a new contract at Goodison.

Ferguson may try a cheeky move before the transfer window closes on Thursday. But insiders involved in the deal believe he will strike in the New Year when Rodwell will still be eligible for their Champions League campaign.

Everton boss David Moyes left Rodwell out of the first two games, a surprise after talking him into signing his new deal during the summer.

The decision, which also stunned England boss Fabio Capello who wants to call him up to the first team, also encouraged United to pounce.

Is this likely? Perhaps. Sir Alex Ferguson is a fan of the Everton teenager but whether he will attempt to nab the England Under 21 international now is another matter. The Manchester United boss has claimed his spending during the transfer window is done and whilst this could be a nice little mind game it is probably fairly accurate.

Having brought in Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling and Bebe the spending by the club could be construed as nominal in relation to the amounts Man City have invested but overall the outlay of around £23m may not be overwhelming but it does represent a sense of planning for the future and perhaps Rodwell would be a similar purchase.

David Moyes will fight tooth and nail to keep the youngster at Goodison Park and has the player tied down to a lengthy contract which could well make buying the player a far more expensive proposition than the fee quoted.
