Eastlands man set for season of doing very very little.
Roque Santa Cruz has been forced to accept that his opportunity to leave Manchester City has now passed.
The Paraguay international striker was expected to be among those on their way out of Eastlands this summer after tumbling down the pecking order.
Various clubs were reported to be keen on the experienced frontman, with loan deals and permanent switches touted on a regular basis.
However, the transfer window slammed shut at 6pm on Tuesday with Santa Cruz still on the books at City.
He now faces an uncertain few months before the window opens again in January, with Roberto Mancini having already informed him that he does not figure prominently in his plans.
“Unfortunately, I have heard from the manager than he won’t be counting on me too much this season,” Santa Cruz told Sky Sports News.
“I heard that a week before the season and I had time to see if I could arrange a move. But in the end the club were happy to keep me and they weren’t happy with anything that came through.
“Now I am looking forward to getting back into training and seeing if I have any opportunities to prove myself in the team.” (Sky Sports)
At various points during the day Roque Santa Cruz was on his way to first Lazio and then Blackburn Rovers but as it turns out he is where he was when he woke up today, doing very little and earning large sums of money doing so. You have to feel sorry for the Paraguayan international, clearly not really sorry for him as he is a millionaire footballer making an obscene amount of money to do something he probably quite enjoys, but you have to ask yourself, why has Roberto Mancini kept him at the club?
Even if any offer from an interested club wasn’t quite what they wanted for the 29 year old, what have they achieved by keeping another mouth on the wage bill? It is fairly likely that Santa Cruz will miss out on the 25 man Premier League squad that the club has to name tomorrow, what then?
Will Roque become a mascot? Will he help around training picking up bibs?
