Manchester United are hoping to make a successful last gasp swoop for French defensive midfielder Blaise Matuidi. Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to add further strength in depth and has earmarked the 23 year old Saint- Etienne man as a target that he hopes to snap up today or failing that in January when the window re-opens.
The former Troyes man is a graduate of the famed Clairefontaine academy and received his first senior call up in Laurent Blanc’s opening national team squad for their recent friendly with Norway. Matuidi has had three consistent seasons at his current Ligue 1 side but is keen to find a new challenge after Saint-Etienne narrowly avoided the drop last season.
Arsene Wenger is known to be an admirer of the determined Toulouse born battler but Ferguson is hoping to beat the Arsenal boss to complete a move worth around £8m to sign the combative battler. The Old Trafford boss has been looking to bring in younger additions to his squad and having brought in the likes of Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez and Bebe this summer he is hoping to add Matiudi in a deal that will not unduly affect the club’s delicate financial footing.
With Owen Hargreaves once again sidelined and the likes of Paul Scholes not getting any younger and with Michael Carrick and Anderson both seemingly off form a move for a midfield addition makes a great deal of sense.
