Jose Mourinho is said to have begged Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to sign Chelsea striker Didier Drogba until the very last moment of the Premier League transfer window, which shut yesterday.

According to the Spanish Mundo Deportivo newspaper, Real boss Mourinho demanded another striker, and even asked Perez for Inter Milan ‘s former Barcelona forward Samuel Eto’o .

However, Perez stood by his decision not to sign another front-man.

Mourinho will therefore have to suffice with two out-and-out strikers in Golzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema , although he is said to be dissatisfied with the latter.

Last month, it was reported that Real were planning a £10million swoop for Ivory Coast international Drogba. (IMScouting)

If Spanish reports are to be believed then Chelsea fans must be relieved to hear that Jose Mourinho failed to get his man yesterday evening. Drogba has been in superb form for Chelsea in the first few games of the season, and would be sorely missed if the move was to go through.

There was no indication of Drogba being interested in the move, however. Was Mourinho just being speculative? Or did he genuinely think he had a chance of luring the striker to Real Madrid?
