Even though a lot less money was spent in the Premier League this summer than in previous years, there were still some top transfers. Here is a list of the top ten transfers to have taken place during the transfer window that will have greatly pleased fans at Anfield, White Hart Lane, Eastlands, Emirates and Old Trafford as well as supporters at Villa Park, St James’ Park and Stamford Bridge.
10. Stephen Ireland – Aston Villa – Exchange
Aston Villa surely got the better deal from the James Milner transfer in the form of Stephen Ireland. The Irishman is a quality player and a fantastic addition to the Aston Villa side. Will make a big impact at the club.
9. Raul Meireles – Liverpool – £10.7m
Liverpool paid a relatively large sum of money for the Portuguese man, but if his performances at the World Cup are anything to go by, they have got themselves a good deal. Not necessarily a direct replacement for the outgoing Mascherano, but Mereiles should prove a dynamic addition to Liverpool’s midfield.
8. Mario Balotelli – Manchester City – £24m
A hefty transfer sum was paid for the Italian, but that won’t bother Manchester City. The former Inter Milan player is blessed with talent and will surely be a big hit in the Premier League.
7. Hatem Ben Arfa – Newcastle – Loan
Ben Arfa could prove to be a fantastic transfer if he can live up to his reputation. The winger was once a transfer target for both Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson. 6. Marouane Chamakh – Arsenal – Free
Chamakh is the sort of forward that Arsenal have been after for a while now, and what a bargain he could prove to be after signing on a free transfer. He has a respectable scoring record and was a star performer at Bordeaux.
5. Ramires – Chelsea – £18m
Ramires was Chelsea’s only big transfer of the summer and will be a great addition to the squad following the departures of midfielders such as Joe Cole and Michael Ballack. He should provide Chelsea with a great midfield option for many years to come.
4. Alexander Hleb – Birmingham City – Loan
Another great loan signing and a massive coup for Birmingham City. The former Arsenal man apparently turned down transfers to Liverpool and Tottenham in order to sign for The Blues.
3. Joe Cole – Liverpool – Free
One of the most naturally gifted midfielder’s in the Premier League, and for free! Although he has not enjoyed the greatest of starts at the club with getting sent off on his Premier League debut, he will surely prove a fantastic asset to Roy Hodgson.
2. Javier Hernandez – Manchester United – £7m
An unknown name before signing for Manchester United, and although he was technically signed in January, Hernandez arrived at Manchester United after some fantastic displays at the World Cup. Could score some crucial goals this season.
1. Rafael Van Der Vaart – Tottenham Hotspur – £8m
This transfer took everyone by surprise, but Van Der Vaart is the world class player Tottenham were looking for. Harry Redknapp has got a real bargain here, and the Dutch International comes with years of Champions League experience as well as bags of creativity.
