Feb. 20, 2010 - London, UNITED KINGDOM - epa02043733 Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas celebrates after scoring his team's second goal from the penalty spot against Sunderland during the English Premiership soccer match between Arsenal FC and Sunderland FC in the Emirates Stadium, north London, Britain, 20 February 2010. Arsenal won 2-0.

Barcelona have not allocated the number 4 jersey to any player this season, since they are waiting for Cesc Fabregas to don the shirt, fully expecting the Arsenal captain to join them next year, according to Spanish reports.
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola wore the jersey for some two decades playing for the club, and the Spanish Sport newspaper says he believes Fabregas “represents his philosophy of the game,” and is still banking on the Gunners skipper joining the Nou Camp.

Rafael Marquez wore the shirt until his summer departure to Red Bull New York .

The summer’s longest transfer saga ended with Fabregas remaining at Arsenal.

However, Barcelona’s technical director Andoni Zubizarreta claimed in a report Friday that the Gunners skipper did all that he could to force through a move.

And it was reported Saturday that Inter Milan made a late move for Fabregas, but the player turned down the Treble winners since he has decided to join Barcelona in 2011. (IMScouting)

In some ways you have to admire Barcelona for their ability to re-invent speculation about their imminent capture of Cesc Fabregas. This whole “Number 4 Shirt’ angle is fresh and new but is essentially another attempt to unsettle a player they failed to capture and is therefore more than a little desperate.

Also Zubizarreta’s claim that the Arsenal skipper did all he could to engineer an Emirates exit may not be taken very well by the Spanish international who probably doesn’t appreciate the inference he is making. The fact remains that Fabregas is still a Gunner and whilst next summer the whole damn saga will once again be on the table it will still be Arsenal’s decision as to whether they entertain offers for the 23 year old and not Barcelona’s.
