OK, so anyone who clicked on this link is a little bit sick. You could find porn anywhere on the internet so why the interest in what hooker Old Trafford hero Wayne Rooney ‘allegedly’ bedded (as the tabloids love to term it). Please read on though as I hope to make some salient points about this whole sordid affair, and by sordid affair I mean the act of trying to sell tabloid newspapers and not any ‘alleged’ act with a prostitute.

Personally I couldn’t care less if the Manchester United man had sex with midgets covered in jam, he is a footballer and I am only interested in what he does on the field of play. Those who claim he is a role model is missing the point. Firstly I do not believe that any footballer is a role model and secondly if the 24 year old England international is a role model he certainly didn’t sign up to be one and therefore should not be judged accordingly.

Look, it may well be immoral in the extreme if Rooney slept with a prostitute whilst his wife was pregnant. Some people may well find that repugnant but the point is this. I don’t care. His job, and a damn good job it must be too, is to play football. If he has a poor game then I will be annoyed. If he doesn’t appear to give 100% (something no one can ever ever lay at Wayne’s door) then I will be annoyed. If he sleeps with a call girl, why should I care?.

Time to make some distinctions here. If anyone, including a footballer, does something properly illegal or in any way harms another individually, let’s say in a drunken brawl, then you may get some sympathy from me. However all Wayne is alleged to have done is had sex with a prostitute. This is something that only affects himself and his wife. If he has done this then it wasn’t particularly smart but it’s really none of my business, or yours.

If someone who works for me does the same as Rooney is ‘alleged’ to have done then again I will only care if it affects his level of work. If not, then it is of no concern to me. My loyalty is to my team and the players who line up for them. Their JOB is to play football. Their JOB is not to be conveniently labelled ‘role models’ to give moral justification to rag tabloids to then pester and hound them through their private lives.

Before anyone takes me the wrong way, I am not justifying the actions of the Old Trafford striker. I am stating that what he does when he is not wearing the United colours or on England duty is really nothing to do with me. I can understand how this kind of story sells papers by the million and I understand that this is how the The Sun and The News of the World and the Daily Mirror operate, hell I even understand that to a very large extent they do so because that is what a large proportion of the population wants to read, sick as it might sound there are people who really get off on this stuff.

Those publications would get a hell of a lot more respect from me if they were honest about their approach to scandal mongering. Far better that they say “We dug up some dirt, why not take a look” instead of labelling those involved as some how sub human and then trying to force down our throats the impression that we as members of the public should be offended by the behaviour of the individuals concerned.

Let me make it abundantly clear. I am not a Man United fan. My reaction to this story would be the same as any ‘shag, get paid and tell’ story that is cranked out lazily by ‘NOTW journalists’. Most football fans will not give a damn about what Wayne may or may not have done but some who have no interest in the game will find themselves duty bound to comment on something they no nothing about.

Any true football fan who is really ‘outraged’ by these claims, let me ask you a question. If the player involved happened to be the captain of your team, a player who was the lifeblood of your club, a player who you idolise for his footballing ability and the sheer genius he possesses on the field of play. Would your attitude towards that player have changed because of something that has cropped up in his PRIVATE life? I think not. Will you stop cheering him as he walks on to the pitch? Will you think any less of him as he scores a 30 yard blinder? You see it’s all about perspective.

A footballers job is to play football, it really is that simple. Just like it is a News of the World journalists job to pry, snoop and sensationalize. If a ‘journalist’ then decides to play away from home and pay for sex with a hooker, that is his business. It works both ways. As long as it doesn’t affect his job then I am pretty sure his boss won’t give a damn either.

Finally, anyone who reads such publications needs to take everything that is printed with a liberal helping of salt, remember as The Jam so eloquently put it, the News of the World is “It’s just a comic, not much more”
