With emerging youngsters like Gareth Bale, Joe Ledley, Aaron Ramsey and Chris Gunter, now is an exciting time to be in charge of Wales.

Chris Coleman

Yes . . .

Many seem to have forgotten the fine job he did as a novice manager at Fulham. Despite limited resources and the sale of his top players, he kept them clear of relegation.

No .  . .

Failed to achieve much in 2 years at Coventry.

Verdict?

Hard to make a clear judgement on his ability given his youth and his mixed record. As a young manager with a point to prove, he makes a good fit.

Ryan Giggs

Yes . . .

The long-time Welsh talisman would enjoy the respect of the squad and the adoration of the fans.

No . . .

Has no managerial or coaching experience.

Verdict?

Wales did enjoy success when they gambled on a young Mark Hughes but it would be far better to give Giggs time to learn the craft. He is a savvy enough footballer to know that as well.

Kenny Jackett

Yes . . .

The former Welsh international midfielder has enjoyed impressive success with Swansea and Millwall, gaining promotions with both teams. Was highly-rated as an assistant manager, especially while with QPR and Watford.

No . . .

Has not had the experience of being in charge of a Premiership side.

Verdict?

His low-profile will probably rule him out but his talent deserves serious consideration.

Mark Hughes

Yes . . .

Engineered a superb turnaround when last in charge. He was very successful at Blackburn and, given the lack of time he had, it seems harsh to consider his period at Man City a failure.

No . . .

Now more focused on Premiership rather than international success.

Verdict?

Recently appointed at Fulham, he will not be taking the job. A shame because he would do well – is it time to think more seriously about managers having the chance to share international and club commitments?
