Emirates boss was reportedly interested in man who maimed Aaron Ramsey?
Ryan Shawcross’ Arsenal transfer ‘dead due to Arsene Wenger vendetta’
Ryan Shawcross has accused Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger of having a personal vendetta against him, suggesting he would be reluctant to ever join the Gunners.
Powerful centre-back Shawcross was linked with the north Londoners in January and again in the summer, especially after Wenger lost the services of veterans William Gallas, Sol Campbell, and Mikael Silvestre.
But Wenger vilified the Stoke defender in February after he was sent off for a challenge which broke Aaron Ramsey’s leg.
And the Frenchman has since accused Shawcross and team-mate Robert Huth of repeatedly fouling Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes during a game last month.
‘He’s obviously got something against me.’ Shawcross said.
‘It’s just weird. He seems to have a problem with Stoke, our manager and certain players.’ (The Metro)
Surely at no point did Arsene Wenger entertain notions of signing the Stoke City centre back? Well this source suggests that such a move was on the cards but only a ‘vendetta’ held by the Arsenal manager prevented the£12m rated defender from moving to the north London club.
Whilst it’s true that the Gunners manager was looking to bring in new defensive options, hence the signings of Sebastien Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny, would he have considered a move for the 23 year old Potters man? Lets disregard for a moment the hefty challenge that broke Aaron Ramsey’s leg in two places, is he the style of defender that the Frenchman usually opts for? Not really.
Some believe that Ryan Shawcross has been unfairly vilified for his tackle on the Welshman but the Stoke City man does have a history of very bad tackles, including a hideous one that he committed whilst he was at Antwerp.
Will be interesting to see the attention the youngster receives when Arsenal play Stoke City in December.
