Italian footballers to down tools.
Players in Serie A plan to strike in a fortnight’s time in a protest over their rights.
A collective contract between the Italian footballers’ association and Serie A guaranteeing players’ rights expired in the summer.
Talks on a new deal failed, leading to plans to strike on 25-26 September.
The strike was announced in a statement read by AC Milan defender Massimo Oddo and signed by the captains and union representatives of all 20 clubs. (BBC Sport)
We often think of footballers as pampered millionaires who spent 95% of the week sleeping, playing computer games or using the services of a hooker or two. However apparently this lifestyle isn’t enough for Serie A stars who are angered by the lack of a new deal being offered by the Italian FA. The threat of a strike is very real but with any luck will be averted by a new deal being placed on the table very soon.
Failing that there will be a large number of very bored Italians with nothing to do on the weekend of 25-26 September.
