It has been recently reported that Liverpool were very close to signing Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez but that the deal was scuppered when Bayern refused the player to go to Anfield on a years loan deal.
Now the German press are reporting that the player has been told he can leave Munich but only if Liverpool are prepared to pay a significant amount, Gomez is down the pecking order at Bayern and playing time is going to be scarce for the 25 year old, but having cost the German giants an estimated €30 Million plus, then it is no surprise that Bayern will want to recoup a significant portion of that fee back.
Whether Liverpool can come up with am offer high enough to tempt Bayern to sell the player is doubtful, that said, the Bundelsiga Champions may have no choice but to accept a huge loss, there is not exactly a long queue of admirers for the 6ft 2in striker.
The fact that Liverpool made an attempt to sign the player and that the player wanted to join Roy Hodgson’s men does at least give some credence to the speculation, but as usual with Liverpool it will end up coming down to money and what sort of transfer funds are made available come January. Mario Gomez is the sort of striker Liverpool will need if they are looking for a partner for Fernando Torres. He is big, strong and has bags of ability. Hodgson is clearly a fan of playing 4-4-2 and having a striker with similar attributes to Mario Gomez would allow him to do this effectively.
For the sort of money being talked about though, are there better options? Fernanto Llorente is another name being talked about, and West Ham’s Carlton Cole was also linked with a move during the summer.
If Liverpool are to play with a 4-4-2 formation, who would fans like to see partner Torres up front?
