Should this goal have counted? Probably not. We see this again and again, a defender knocks the ball back so that he can take the kick, on this occasion ludicrously poor referee Stuart Atwell decided Michael Turner had TAKEN the free-kick then it seems gloriously obvious he hadn’t. Fernando Torres gleefully takes the ball and lays on a tap in for Dirk Kuyt whilst Sunderland players wonder what just happened. Luckily for the Black Cats Atwell gave them a penalty that seemed harsh to say the least, proving that his ineptitude has no bias.

Liverpool failed to overcome Sunderland at Anfield and heaped more pressure on Roy Hodgson in the process. Stuart Atwell will be the subject of much attention following another below par performance from the young referee who decided Dirk Kuyt’s opener would count after a bizarre series of events.
Darren Bent then scored from the spot after Atwell decided that Christian Poulsen handball was deliberate enough to award a penalty. The prolific Sunderland man then scored a second before Steven Gerrard headed an equalizer.

Two glaring errors from Manuel Almunia helped West Brom to a surprise win at the Emirates. Roberto Di Matteo’s Baggies side deserved all three points but had a lot to thank the Spanish keeper for even though he did manage to save a spot kick.
Peter Odemwingie was the star of the show as the Hawthorns travelling support cheered their side on to a win as they held on to increased pressure from Arsenal who fought their way back from three goals down thanks to a brace from Samir Nasri.

Carlos Tevez scored the only goal of a keenly fought contest at Eastlands as Manchester City brought Chelsea’s 100% start to the season to a shuddering halt. Roberto Mancini’s side had set out to stifle their opponents and countered effectively with David Silva working well with the City captain.
Joe Hart was rarely called upon as Vincent Kompany and Kolo Toure did excellently to shut up shop and prevent Didier Drogba or Nicolas Anelka from any clear cut chances. Tevez scored an excellent winner breaking from the centre circle and finishing with a shot that went in off the post to give City a deserved win.

Every day we will ask a famous footballer a very very silly question and wait to see if they respond. This is in part to satisfy our rather dubious sense of humour as well as to see if today’s footballers are up for playing along. Today’s victim/contestant if Daniel Gabbidon. For the record Darren Bent failed to respond to yesterday’s Tweet.
