Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney looks set to be included in the England squad to face Montenegro on 12 October.
An ankle injury has kept Rooney out of his club’s last two matches, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he should be fit for the Euro 2012 qualifier.
Rio Ferdinand and John Terry are also likely to make manager Fabio Capello’s squad when it is announced on Monday.
But with Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe injured there could be a first call-up for Newcastle’s Andy Carroll.
Defoe, who bagged a hat-trick against Bulgaria in September, is sidelined with ankle ligament damage and with Fulham’s Bobby Zamora also injured Carroll, left out of the Under-21 squad, could get the call despite only being used as a late substitute as his club lost 2-1 at Manchester City on Sunday.
In defence, Ferdinand and Terry should return having missed England’s victories over Bulgaria and Switzerland, though the form of Everton’s Phil Jagielka in those matches makes their place in the team less certain.

Also in question is whether Manchester United defender Ferdinand will be recalled to his position as England captain should he play at Wembley, Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard having impressed in his absence. (BBC Sport)

Yep we are ready for another international break and with that comes the inevitable squad selection. Fabio Capello’s side takes on Montenegro at Wembley in a game that may not be as one sided as some believe. Zlatko Kranj?ar’s side have stated the Euro 2012 campaign with two victories and have a number of top notch players including Roma striker Mirko Vucinic and Sporting Lisbon midfielder Simon Vuk?evi? as well as some solid support.

That said, anything less than a convincing win will be considered a failure. It will be interesting to see how the likes of Rio Ferdinand ease back into international action given recent good performances by the national side.
