Manchester United are readying a significant bid to sign Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon next summer. Sir Alex Ferguson has been linked with a myriad of alternatives to succeed Edwin Van der Sar but is now ready to prepare a move for the vastly experienced Italian international.
The Old Trafford boss knows just how crucial it is to have a safe pair of hands at the back having suffered the highs and lows of truly inspired goalies like his current Dutch custodian and Great Dane Peter Schmeichel as well as the woeful selections of Massimo Taibi and the distinctly average Roy Carroll.
Valued at around £16m, Buffon is surprisingly still just 32 which in goalkeeping terms still means he has many seasons in the tank. Now in his 16th season in Serie A (with one sojourn in Serie B) the talented goalie may well be looking for a new challenge and after last season’s disastrous campaign he had hoped that a new boss and several new additions would propel his Turin side back up the table and into a potential title challenge.
This far however this has not proved to be the case and Juventus are currently in seventh place after an indifferent start to the campaign. Gianluigi Buffon had stated last summer that he was not averse to a move to the Premier League and would surely be interested in a move to Manchester United where he could ably challenge for top honours again.
