Espanyol’s emerging midfielder Raul Baena is allegedly a target for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, according to reports from Spain.
Radio station Cadena SER comments that the 21-year-old had been garnering interest from a number of major clubs across Europe, including fellow Primera Division sides Valencia and Villarreal.
An injury curbed his development last season, and he has only recently returned to first team action, coming on as a second half substitute in the weekend victory over Mallorca.
However, Wenger has been suitably impressed by Baena, who spent four years in Barcelona’s youth ranks before moving onto the Blanc i Blau, and is considered a January raid in order to bolster his squad for the second half of the season.
Baena has the flexibility to play anywhere across the middle of midfield, and his contract expires in the summer of 2013.
Espanyol have exceeded expectations so far in La Liga this season under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino, who has guided them to sixth place in the table. (Goal.com)
Arsenal will face competition from top Spanish sides for their latest midfield target’s signature, but with the inevitable departure of Cesc Fabregas, Arsene Wenger will be determined to get his man.
A January move has been suggested for the young Spanish player, and he could add yet more versatility to the Arsenal midfield for the second half of the season.
A goalkeeper signing will remain a priority for Arsene Wenger this January, but fans will surely be excited at the prospect of yet more young talent being brought to the Emirates.
