Manager Pep Guardiola has indicated that Barcelona could consider an attempt to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
England international Rooney is at the centre of a sensational transfer saga after it emerged on Tuesday that he wanted to leave Old Trafford.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that his star asset has made it clear that he has no intention of agreeing a new contract with last season’s Premier League runners-up.
Arch-rivals Manchester City and Chelsea have been linked with Rooney as a result, while Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he would like to sign the multi-talented forward, who turns 25 on Sunday.
Defending Spanish champions Barcelona are also thought to be considering a £25million bid in the January transfer window and Guardiolais an admirer of Rooney.
“He is one of the greatest players in the world as there are very few players with his qualities,” (Sky Sports)
Is this the opening gambit in what will surely turn out to be the mother of all bidding wars? Clearly an offer of £25m is way below Wayne Rooney’s value but perhaps this is more to test the water with Manchester United to see if they really will look to sell the 24 year old who appears to have made it clear he is looking to leave the club.
The likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea are all expected to make moves over the coming weeks and if indeed Sir Alex Ferguson fails to hold on to the England international it seems likely he will leave for one of this quartet of European giants.
