PSV midfielder Ibrahim Afellay looks set to leave PSV Eindhoven after the club and player’s representatives released a statement saying they thought it was unrealistic for a contract extension agreement to be reached.
PSV released a statement on their website saying they had come to an agreement to begin looking for potential suitors for the young midfielder. A January move looks likely as Afellay would be able to leave on a free transfer after his contract expires in the summer.
Afellay, 24, is a product of the PSV Eindhoven academy and has drawn interest from top European clubs in recent seasons after making his debut for PSV in 2004. (World Soccer Reader)
PSV Eindhoven’s Ibrahim Afellay is now free to find a new club, and he shouldn’t find it too difficult seeing as some of Europe’s biggest teams have already stated their interest.
Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal are said to be the Premier League contender’s for the midfielder’s signature, and it now seems that the player will accept the best offer put forward to him.
Despite his young age, Afellay has won 30 caps for Holland, scoring 7 goals. Sir Alex Ferguson leads the chase to sign the talented Dutchman, not least because the PSV man said he was keen on a move to Old Trafford. A deal in January would cost around £6m, which would be preferable to having to wait for the summer when all manner of club’s will be chasing after the adaptable attacker.
