GERARD HOULLIER says he cannot rule out the possibility Ashley Young has been tapped up.
Winger Young this week halted talks on a new contract at Aston Villa.
But Villans boss Houllier insists there is nothing for the club to worry about – despite their prize asset asking to leave negotiations until the summer.
England star Young, 25, will then have only 12 months left on his deal and his value will reduce dramatically.
Ahead of today’s trip to Sunderland, Houllier said: “What has changed? Nothing. I think it’s true when he said he wanted to concentrate on his football. I told him the main thing for him is to step up a level.
“To do that, you can’t lose two or three months talking about what might happen.
“We will sit down at the end of the season. I’m happy with that. He is not out of contract at the end of the season.”
Asked if he thought Young had been tapped up, Houllier said: “Well, you never know in football. I’ve read that Tottenham are after him and they are closing in. But it’s not a matter of selling him.” (The Sun)
Read between the lines and it appears that the Frenchman is none to subtly claiming that Tottenham have been tapping up Ashley Young, it’s a claim that may land him in hot water. However it does seem that the England winger is looking to buy himself time and may well be looking to land himself a move.
Some of Young’s statements will not have pleased the Aston Villa faithful. He claims he wants to concentrate on his game and is therefore not putting pen to paper on a new deal, he says that all this talk of contracts may affect his game, but rather than signing the contract, which would of course end the speculation and paper talk, he decides its better to wait and see what offers come in for his services.
Do Aston Villa fans think that the 25 year old is treating the club with respect or is he trying to engineer a Villa Park exit?
