Liverpool join Wigan and Blackpool in race for Auxerre midfielder Valter Birsa
Wigan and Blackpool are keen on Auxerre midfielder Valter Birsa.
The Slovenia international impressed in the World Cup and is out of contract in the summer.
Liverpool have also been alerted to the 24-year-old’s availability and could make a cut-price offer in January.
Birsa has impressed in the Champions League and scored for Auxerre against Ajax this week. (Daily Mail)
Surely we have learned from our lesson by bringing in the likes of Christian Poulsen and Paul Konchesky that if we want to be a top six club, top four seemingly something of a dream right now, then we should not be buying decidedly average players.
Valter Birsa is a player who had a decent season last term but has bombed this term as his Auxerre side fell from 3rd post last term to 17th this season, sound familiar? The fact that we would be battling the likes of Blackpool and Wigan for the Slovenian should say it all.
I could just about understand such a move if we were talking about a teenager with real prospects but Birsa is a player who has pottered around Ligue 1 for four seasons without really attracting any solid interest, so why would Roy Hodgson deem him worthy of interest? Is it because he is cheap? Didn’t we just get new owners?
I hope to god this is merely a bit of fabricated paper talk.
