Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly considering a move for Aston Villa winger Ashley Young. The England international has angered Villa Park manager Gerard Houllier with his insistence on not agreeing a new contract until the end of the season, leading many, including Houllier himself, that the 25 year old may be set to ask to leave the club.
Ferguson is known to be an admirer of the former Watford man and apparently the Old Trafford boss was monitoring Young as he was set to leave Vicarage Road but no offer was forthcoming at the time. Sir Alex has promised Wayne Rooney that the club will look to make more high profile moves in the transfer market and is believed to now be ready to make a move for speedy wide man.
Tottenham were also said to be interested in the Aston Villa man but given the rise to prominence Gareth Bale and the consistent displays from Aaron Lennon a move to White Hart Lane may not be as likely as some had once believed.
With Luis Antonio Valencia out with long term injury and with Ryan Giggs clearly nearing the end of his glittering career, a move for another winger may well make a great deal of sense. Ashley Young can play on both wings but is most effective on the left and could be a very useful addition to the Man United ranks. Nani appears to work best in a floating role and the likes of Gabriel Obertan have failed to make an impact.
Aston Villa have found it hard to prevent big names from leaving the club with players such as Gareth Barry and James Milner deciding the time was right to move elsewhere. Ashley Young is thought to be valued at around £18m.
