WAYNE Rooney’s stunning decision to stay at Old Trafford pocketed him a pay hike of £50,000 a week – and earned Sir Alex Ferguson a £60m transfer kitty.
Shocked Manchester United fans were celebrating last night after Rooney’s dramatic U-turn saw him pen a new five-year deal to stay at the club.
Rooney has signed a contract worth £140,000 a week, making him the highest-paid star in the club’s history.
The staggering deal will see the England hitman trouser a whopping £33.6m plus bonuses and add-ons until 2015.
But Starsport understands that the clinching factor in Rooney deciding to pledge his future to Old Trafford was a promise from the Glazers that Fergie would be given the funds he wanted to make at least two big-name signings before next season.

If Sir Alex Ferguson can indeed secure Dutch playmaker Sneijder and Bosnian goal machine Dzeko then it will do wonders for Manchester United’s attempts to catch up to champions elect Chelsea. Rooney’s insistence on the club making moves for top notch additions may well help push the Glazers into action.
The Inter Milan attack minded midfielder is not too happy with things under Rafa Benitez and could well be persuaded to move to the Premier League but would not come cheap. Edin Dzeko seems set to leave Wolfsburg sooner rather than later after a shaky start to the campaign under Steve McClaren.
The 24 year old has been in tremendous form netting 70 goals in the past two and a bit seasons, despite Wolfsburg poor form since they surprisingly took the Bundesliga title back in 2009.
If the Old Trafford club can land these two it would go some way to reasserting their dominance and would prove to the likes of Chelsea and Man City that they can still tempt big name players.
