Inter Milan and Juventus are ready to swoop for Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar , according to Italian reports.
The South African is yet to sign an extension to his contract, which runs out at the end of the season.
And Everton boss David Moyes admitted that the 28-year-old could leave for nothing at the end of the current campaign.
“If it came to that, then I said I would be happy for it to run down if he didn’t want to sign,” he said in the Daily Star.
“For what we paid it was definitely worth it.
“I’m hoping he would choose to stay. If he doesn’t, then that happens.”
Pienaar moved to Everton from Borussia Dortmund for £2 million in 2007.
He scored seven goals and set up four last season, and he has found the net once so far this term. (IMScouting)
It seems that David Moyes may be preparing for the worst and his decision to not look for a nominal payment in January for his South African midfielder may in fact me a wise move. Any sum they would get for the former Ajax man would not be huge and the club would perhaps benefit more keeping him for the second half of the campaign as the Goodison Park side looks to continue it’s recovery and sets it sights on a top seven finish.
Also the extra months at the club may help to persuade the 28 year old that perhaps he would be better off staying at the Merseyside club. One wonders if Pienaar would manage to cement regular first team football in Milan or Turin and a lot could depend on what offer the two clubs put on the table.
