Arsenal will make a renewed attempt to sign Werder Bremen giant Per Mertesacker in January. The German international has been on Arsene Wenger’s radar for some time and the Gunners boss sees the vastly experienced centre back as an ideal pillar to steady his defence.
The 6ft 5in 26 year old defender has already amassed 69 international caps and is considered one of the most consistent performers in Europe and may well be interested in a new challenge after four years at Werder Bremen and the success of a January move could very much depend on how his side is performing in the Bundesliga.
Thomas Schaaf’s side are currently eighth in the table after an average start to the season and have only racked up two points from their opening three games in their Champions League campaign. A move for Mertesacker would cost the north London side around £14m but would greatly improve the Arsenal defence that has managed just two clean sheets in the Premier League this season.
