Arsenal are in a race to sign Anderlecht’s teenage sensation Romelo Lukaku but Spurs, Chelsea and Real Madrid also want him.
The 17-year-old is already being described as the new Didier Drogba and clubs are queueing up to take him away from Belgium but at the same time Anderlecht are trying to ensure they make as much money as they can from him and have slapped a £20m price tag on his head.
Arsene Wenger will be hoping he can persuade the player to join the Gunners but he faces a real fight with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid said to be taking a personal interest in taking the player to the Spanish capital.
Lukaku’s agent Christophe Henrotay said: “Many clubs are interested and the decision is not easy. It’s necessary to find the best option and that’s not just about the financial issue.” (Eat Sleep Sport)
Clearly there is an issue with Arsene Wenger spending such a big sum of money on a teenager, we all know that the Arsenal boss doesn’t often spend big on any player, let alone one who is just 17 years of age. However it does seem that the north London club is the perfect fit for the Belgian striker.
The Gunners boss is of course known for his willingness to give youth a chance and to throw starlets in at the deep end to see if they sink or swim, a move to Real Madrid could well serve to only hold the Anderlecht star back, not least because Jose Mourinho now has a host of new signings who will make Lukaku’s chances of first team football next to impossible.
Chelsea and Tottenham are very much outside shots to capture the powerfully built front man and links to both clubs seem tentative at best. It may be that any deal to sign Romelu will include payments attributed to what he achieves, how many games he plays etc.. rather than a straight cash sum, and this may well again suit Wenger’s cautious approach.
