Bayern Munich have launched a £40m bid to rival Manchester City for Edin Dzeko.
The German giants have struggled domestically this season and want to freshen up their attack by splashing out on the Wolfsburg striker.
Sportsmail revealed City are determined to land their long-term target in January but they now face a fight with Bayern, who believe they have the pulling power and finances to better City.
Manchester United are also admirers of Dzeko, 24, but are reluctant to spend such a vast sum.
Bayern, though, can offset their spending by offloading Liverpool target Mario Gomez. (Daily Mail)
It is difficult to say how much truth there is in this Daily Mail story.
Edin Dzeko is an accomplished target man who has been in exceptional goalscoring form for the last three seasons, but whether he is worth the £40m quoted – making him the fifth most expensive player of all time – is a different matter.
Similarly, Mario Gomez is a quality player on his day. However, he transferred to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2009 for a fee estimated between €30-35m, and Liverpool would be looking at spending significantly less than that per player in January – though NESV’s transfer plans remain unclear.
At the age of 25, the Bundesliga record signing is still young enough to remain within NESV’s new transfer guidelines, but his resale potential would be a real gamble.
