Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is lining up a significant summer bid to beat all other interested parties in his race to sign German international keeper Manuel Neuer. With Edwin Van der Sar nearing the end of his lengthy career the Old Trafford boss is desperate to find a suitable replacement for the veteran Dutchman and believes that the Schalke goalie is the right man for the job.
The 24 year old is in his fifth season as the first choice keeper at the Gelsenkirchen club and given that the club is struggling badly after last season’s terrific attempt to land their first Bundesliga title in over 50 years, a move away from the club seems more and more likely.
Schalke sit in 16th spot with just two wins from their opening 11 games, crucially however they have conceded far fewer goals than the other sides that surround them and that is testament to Neuer’s efforts between the sticks.
Ferguson has been tracking the giant keeper for some time and is willing to match the £12m valuation that has been placed on Manuel Neuer because the Man United boss knows just how crucial it is for the club to have a solid custodian behind his back four, something he has learned during his 24 year stint at the club which has seen the club go through some truly top quality keepers like Peter Schmeichel, a player Neuer has been likened to, and Van der Sar and some woefully inept ones in the shape of Massimo Taibi and Roy Carroll.
